Dora Makina İmalat Sanayi ve Ticaret Limited Şirketi, a member of the OSTİM Defence and Aerospace Cluster (OSSA), received the first order from the €600 million European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) Project.

Dora Makine, with its high-precision CNC machines, has become a supplier to CERN for precision part production, making it a source of pride for Turkish industry.

Established in 2004, the OSTİM-based manufacturer produces parts using modern and precision production machinery, controls them with sensitive measuring equipment, and ships them primarily to domestic and international defense industry, electronics, and machinery manufacturing companies.

The company, jointly owned by Bekir Sağlamyürek, İbrahim Yarsan, A. Tekin Çakmakçı, and Hakan Başdal, employs 75 people.

A Significant Prestige

General Manager Bekir Sağlamyürek stated that they also have a separate production infrastructure that manufactures its own patented products in the medical sector, and that being a supplier to CERN is a significant prestige. Sağlamyürek said, “Our tender was just the beginning. I believe that after us, many more companies will find their place in this large market with much larger orders.”

“It placed a responsibility on us”

In a statement to OSTİM Newspaper regarding the development of the CERN order, Dora Makina Management stated that, as a company, they made a strategic decision seven years ago to work with corporate, reliable and trustworthy international customers alongside their important domestic customers, and that they aim to increase their customer base slowly but surely.

The company partners summarized their findings as follows: “Following this, through systematic research and the constructive relationships we established, we are now producing for a select number of corporate clients abroad, according to their requests and specifications. CERN was one of these corporate clients. We had been working with the institution for a long time. The Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB) reminded us of CERN's great potential, and we accelerated our efforts in this direction.”

When we informed CERN that we wanted to participate in a tender that matched our production capabilities, we were not invited, based on the assumption that we would not be able to meet the production deadline. In response, we persistently reiterated our request to participate in this tender. Shortly afterward, we were invited to another tender. After carefully reviewing the specifications and preparing a very detailed price quote, we submitted our offer, explicitly stating that we could not meet the delivery deadline because the raw materials specified in the offer were not available in Turkey. Our offer was accepted, and we received our first order. The fact that this was the first order placed by the European Nuclear Research Center with a Turkish company was a source of great pride and joy for us.

This success has placed a great responsibility on us. Our goal is to deliver the order in accordance with the customer's specifications and within the foreseen delivery date. We will continue our efforts to obtain a larger share of the work in the parts and sub-assemblies needed by CERN.”

“TURKISH COMPANIES WILL GET A LARGER SHARE”

TOBB President M. Rifat Hisarcıklıoğlu stated that the CERN market will be an important opportunity for the Turkish business world and will contribute to the growth of the economy. Hisarcıklıoğlu said, “With the liaison office we established and the information meetings we held, we aimed to clarify and pave the way for our private sector. As a result, the first order has been received. This is the first step for this huge market. I believe that many more Turkish firms will gain larger shares in the coming period. Innovation and high technology will be the biggest factor in growing our economy. In this sense, we attach great importance to our becoming an associate member of CERN.”

Industry Liaison Office

Established within TOBB (Turkish Chambers of Commerce and Industry), the Industry Liaison Office is responsible for coordinating the participation of industrial and manufacturing firms from CERN member countries in tender processes and provides detailed information on these processes. Information about CERN tender announcements can be accessed at www.tobb.org.tr/cern, and the TOBB-CERN Industry Liaison Office can be contacted via email at cern@tobb.org.tr.

How did the CERN marketplace originate?

With Turkey's commencement of its CERN Associate Membership in May 2015, industrial firms operating in Turkey gained the right to participate in procurement and tenders conducted by CERN. CERN, where an average of €600 million worth of goods and services are purchased, is expected to create a new market for Turkish firms, as well as provide a boost to high-tech production and R&D activities.
