The resilience of steel structures in earthquakes was once again highlighted by the damage assessment studies conducted after the Kahramanmaraş and Hatay earthquakes. In these disasters, where approximately 200,000 buildings were destroyed, the fact that not a single steel structure collapsed demonstrated the potential of steel structures to provide safe living spaces.
The Earthquake-Resistant Construction Summit, organized to promote the widespread use of steel structures and raise awareness in this field, will offer important information about preventive and corrective actions that can be taken against earthquakes, primarily under the theme “Steel to Prevent People from Dying”.
Within the scope of the summit, measures to prevent loss of life and property in future earthquakes, especially the Istanbul earthquake, will be discussed by expert engineers, architects, and representatives from the public and private sectors. Detailed information will be provided on the advantages of steel structures, new technologies, and structural resilience in widely attended sessions.
- Yener Gür’eş, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Turkish Structural Steel Association (TUCSA), stated that the aim of the summit was to convey the importance of earthquake-resistant construction to a wide audience, to properly introduce the safety advantages provided by steel structures to the public, to increase public awareness and thus raise demand for safe living spaces, and to offer solution-oriented suggestions to construction industry professionals, local governments, and public institutions.
All relevant public institutions and organizations, universities, local governments, architects, engineers, contractors, and non-governmental organizations have been invited to the summit. Participants will be able to learn about new solutions through interactive sessions and technology stands.
