"Great Examples of R&D Commercialization in OSTİM"

Turkish Patent and Trademark Office President Prof. Dr. Habip Asan said, “There are good examples of transforming our R&D into products and commercializing them by bringing them to market. Perhaps the best examples of this are being done here under the OSTİM brand. In this sense, I think OSTİM Organized Industrial Zone is an exemplary place in Turkey.” Asan pointed to OSTİM as the place where the best example of public-university-industry cooperation in Turkey is located.

A cooperation protocol for the Hezarfen OSTİM Clean Energy Project was signed between OSTİM, the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office, and the OSTİM Renewable Energy and Environmental Technologies Cluster (OSTİM ENERJİK).

At the signing ceremony held in OSTİM Organized Industrial Zone, the protocol was signed by the President of the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office, Prof. Dr. Habip Asan, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of OSTİM, Orhan Aydın, and the Chairman of the Board of Directors of OSTİM ENERJİK, Yaşar Çelik.

The pilot application of the project, titled "Development of Innovation Capacities of Turkish SMEs," was carried out in OSTİM in 2007. Within the scope of the Hezarfen OSTİM Clean Energy Project, the industrial property potential of 30 SMEs that are members of OSTİM ENERJİK will be identified, and one-on-one consultancy services will be provided.

R&D projects can be brought into the economy through patents.

OSTİM ENERJİK President Yaşar Çelik explained that each of the 30 member companies participating in the project has completed at least one publicly funded R&D project.

Highlighting the importance of bringing R&D projects into the economy, Yaşar Çelik said, "One of our arguments regarding bringing them into the economy is patents, that is, ensuring their protection in terms of copyright."

Çelik expressed his excitement about the project, sharing the following views: “Our cluster has 80 members working in an interdisciplinary system. We have over 500 engineers and over 5,000 employees. We strive to improve the ability of our members to work together. We design every activity in collaboration with OSTİM to benefit the public and our members.”

Awareness of patents and trademarks should be increased among SMEs.

OSTİM Board Chairman Orhan Aydın stated that the pilot application of the Hezarfen Project was first carried out in OSTİM in 2007 with the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office, and that they benefited greatly from the study. He noted that the project's outputs contributed to other studies as well, and that nearly 100 companies in OSTİM were involved within the scope of the project. Aydın emphasized that OSTİM is Ankara's first industrial zone and the starting point for a large number of companies located in Ankara's 12 Organized Industrial Zones.

President Aydın said, “We want the companies in our region to have a structure that increases their competitiveness and can compete with the whole world. When we see an OSTİM company at a fair anywhere in the world, it excites us to see that our products have a global presence.”

Highlighting the importance of patents and registrations, Orhan Aydın stated that SMEs are not sufficiently aware of this. He conveyed the following message: “As OSTİM, I would like to express our readiness to increase awareness of patents and registrations through our clusters and to cooperate with the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office. I also thank the institution for the Hezarfen OSTİM Clean Energy Project. I congratulate the companies participating in this project, wishing them beneficial contributions to our companies, our region, and our country.”

“Projects change the destiny of cities and countries”

The President of the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office, Prof. Dr. Habip Asan, noted that the Hezarfen Project, first launched with OSTİM in 2007, has been very successful and has produced success stories.

Habip Asan emphasized that the main objective of the project is to teach SMEs how to use industrial property as a tool both nationally and internationally.

Asan stated that April 26th is celebrated every year as World Intellectual Property Rights Day, and that this year's theme is 'Innovation for a Green Future,' adding that the Hezarfen OSTİM Clean Energy Project is very much in line with this theme.

Habip Asan stated that significant experience has been gained in R&D in Turkey, adding: “We have learned a bit about doing R&D. Our number of international publications is very high. However, we are not so successful in innovation. There are good examples of transforming R&D into a product, commercializing it by bringing it to market. Perhaps the best examples of this are being done here under the OSTİM brand. In this sense, I think OSTİM Organized Industrial Zone is an exemplary place in Turkey.”

I wish OSTİM Technical University all the best. It's progressing very successfully, and I'm following it closely. I believe OSTİM is perhaps the best example of public-university-industry collaboration in Turkey. In this sense, I think this project is very meaningful.

"Hopefully, with this project, we will further advance intellectual property awareness in Turkey and come together in new and different projects. Projects like this, developed here, will change the destiny of cities and countries."

About the project

The project, which will be carried out under the patronage of the Minister of Industry and Technology of the Republic of Turkey, Mustafa Varank, has the following partners: Turkish Patent and Trademark Office, OSTİM Organized Industrial Zone Directorate and OSTİM ENERJİK.

The project targets SMEs operating in the manufacturing sector and possessing an innovative approach. Within the scope of the project, the industrial property potential of 30 SMEs that are members of OSTİM ENERJİK will be identified, and one-on-one consultancy services will be provided. This will involve an assessment of the industrial property potential of the SME and the sector as a whole. Based on this assessment, a comprehensive picture of the company's industrial property capabilities will be created.

Following the meeting, an expert will visit the SME within one month and prepare a report on the company, which will then be sent to the firm. The SME's progress in the field of industrial property will be regularly monitored on a periodic basis.
