Glass wool

Glass Wool

It can be produced in the form of mattresses, plates, pipes and casts with different coating materials in different sizes and densities, depending on the place and purpose of use. It provides thermal insulation, sound insulation and acoustic regulation. It can be used up to a maximum temperature of 200 oC. They are bendable, fire-resistant glass fibers used in heat and sound insulation obtained from melted glass.

Withstand Temperature and Combustion Status

It depends on whether the material is bakelite (yellow) or non-bakelite (white). Bakelite products are used up to 250 oC at most. After this temperature, the bakelite starts to burn and evaporates with an odor, and the binding of the fibers disappears. If the temperature reaches 500-550 oC, the bakelite completely disappears and the color becomes white.

Mechanical Properties

Pressure, shrinkage, rupture, etc. of glass wool. strength varies according to the density of the product. The compressive strength of glass wool in rolls is very low.

Sensitivity to Water

Glass fibers do not get wet. However, there are 99% air spaces between the fibers in glass wool. Therefore, if water enters the material directly or indirectly, these air spaces are filled with water. Wetting glass wool adversely affects the insulation function.

Sensitivity to Chemical Substances

In general, glass wool is resistant to all acids. Only hydrofluoric acid acts on this material.

Vapor Impermeability

The value of glass wool (μ) is 1.2 and it easily passes the steam. Therefore, if there is a risk of steam in a construction made with glass wool, in cold areas where condensation is not desired, a vapor barrier material (aluminum foil, bituminous cardboard, PVC, Polyethylene, etc.) should be placed on the hot side of the insulation to keep the glass wool dry.
