Ultracapacitors or supercapacitors, technically known as Electrochemical Double Layer Capacitor (EDLC), are capacitors with high energy density. Capacitors store charges on the positive and negative plates, while ultracapacitors store charges in the spaces between the electrodes and the electrolyte. Its carbon-based electrodes with perforated structure, very high surface area (>2000m2/g) and very thin dielectric material also allow the distance between the electrodes to be reduced. Thanks to these two features, very large capacities can be achieved in very small sizes.

Ultracapacitors can be used in many industrial applications, from milli-amp currents or milli-watt powers to hundreds of amperes or hundreds of watts of power, thanks to their serial and parallel connection.
